Our History
Wildfire Sprinkler, Inc. has been awarded three separate FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Projects (HMGP) to protect lives and property from wildfire, two of which are for Cook County, Minnesota, and the third for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. These HMGP Projects have been the only ones approved by FEMA as effective tools in wildfire hazard mitigation.
In addition to these wildfire mitigation projects, Wildfire Sprinkler also was awarded an HMGP Project to design and deliver portable pressure hydrant systems and components to a volunteer fire department.
Wildfire Sprinkler Protection Systems™
Cook County, MN, awarded Wildfire Sprinkler, Inc., in 1999 a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Project to design and install Wildfire Sprinkler Protection Systems™ (WSPS) at two hundred private and commercial properties that were put in extreme wildfire danger due to the July 4th Blowdown in Northeastern Minnesota.
The $700,000+ Project was successfully completed in the summer of 2001. Since deployment, WSPS has been used on several occasions for structure protection without any property loss due to wildfire or prescribed fires.
Portable Pressure Hydrant FEMA Hazard Mitigation Project
The Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department awarded Wildfire Sprinkler, Inc., a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Project to design and deliver portable pressure hydrant systems and components to be used to supply large volumes of water during fire emergencies. Because the Gunflint Trail Fire District includes numerous lakes and rivers, the Fire Department needed a method to access this valuable natural resource throughout the year.
Completed in the fall of 2003, the portable pressure hydrant system consists of engine-mounted and portable propane fueled high volume pumps, light weight large diameter hose, ice augers and strainers, as well as permanent dry hydrant installations. Carried on fire engines located at 3 separate fire halls, the system can be quickly deployed to supply up to 1,200 GPM at up to 3 separate locations within the District.
Because of this Project, the Fire Department plans to lower the ISO Fire Rating for the District in 2004.
Wildfire Sprinkler Portable Structure Kits
Cook County, Minnesota, awarded Wildfire Sprinkler, Inc., in 1999 a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Project to deliver twenty portable structure protection kits to the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Dept. Consisting of multifuel portable pumps, hose, and sprinkler head assemblies, the kits are deployed at strategic locations through the Gunflint Fire District to be deployed in wildfire emergencies.
Designed to run unattended to over 24 hours, each Kit covers approximately an acre of area and produces the equivalent of 2" of normal rainfall during the runtime.
Since 1999, the Kits were successfully deployed protecting structures from a wildfire in 2002 and protecting a resort from prescribed fires to reduce fuel loading in 2001.
